Businesses all around Australia will soon be obligated to find new connectivity solutions as older incumbent telco solutions are being retired. NBN Co has announced that ISDN (the Integrated Services Digital Network) will be disconnected from September 2019 and totally discontinued by 2022.

The upcoming technology will replace existing telecommunications networks, which were currently used to provide internet connectivity and phone services, by the National Broadband Network (NBN). The NBN is an upgrade of Australia’s older incumbent phone and internet infrastructure. The upgrade will affect the vast majority of people across all Australia, specifically landline phone and internet services. The upgrade is compulsory and is not done automatically.

What Is The NBN?

NBN Co Limited (trading as nbn) is an Australian government-owned corporation tasked to design, build and operate Australia’s National Broadband Network as a monopoly wholesale broadband provider. This initiative is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Australia and will upgrade the older incumbent ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) connectivity with new voice and data services.

NBN services will be accessed by end users (both residential and business) through retail service providers. Businesses all around Australia will have an opportunity to experience speeds as high as 100Mbs with an option to increase to one gigabyte per second (1Gbps) in years to come.

What Is The SIP?

As ISDN will be totally retired in 2022, businesses will be forced to switch over to new digital voice solutions. The transition to new solutions such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) will help businesses avoid issues down the track.

SIP is the future of business communication voice. SIP is technology that allows employees to make and receive voice calls and it manages multimedia communications such as video calls, instant messaging, collaboration apps, and media distribution and so on.

Ask these questions, and find out if you will have an issue with your current infrastructure.

SIP could potentially bring massive benefits over ISDN such as reduced costs, increased productivity and flexibility, and level of reliability. Any major change must be well planned and managed carefully in order to reach maximum benefits.

Before you switch to SIP, here are a few questions to ponder:

  1. Would you like to keep your old business number?
  2. Are you ready for the ISDN switch over?
  3. What types of business outcomes are you seeking to achieve?
  4. Are you trying to keep costs down in your business infrastructure?
  5. Are you struggling with reliability and hardware costs?
